The Business Case for Diversity

Brussels 01-10-2006

Recognising and promoting diversity among employees in private enterprises can have many positive effects on a business. This is the message of a report based on two surveys carried out in 2005, which produced 919 responses from companies across the European Union.

Many companies are wary of introducing the concept of "workplace diversity" in their recruitment, training or work practices, fearing it may be expensive and that the effort is simply not worthwhile. This survey points to positive outcomes where diversity management is adopted, resulting in better levels of respect among employees and improved customer relations. Diversity also improves business innovation, leading to new products and services, according to more than 26% of the companies sureveyed.

Results of the business diversity survey, together with a number of illustrative case studies, are reported in a European Commission publication.
